Japan's Startup Ecosystem
Enters a New Phase

In November 2022, Tokyo Metropolitan Government formulated the strategy "Global Innovation with STARTUPS," aimed at pioneering a new era in collaboration with startups, addressing Tokyo's challenges, and driving growth. This strategy promotes the growth of startups from a "Born Global" perspective and sets forth an "Innovation Vision of 10x10x10," multiplying global reach, expanding the base, and enhancing public-private partnerships by tenfold to carve out the future.

Not only startup entrepreneurs but also venture capitalists (VCs), accelerators, large corporations, government agencies, and research institutions that form the ecosystem are steadily increasing in Japan. The Japanese startup ecosystem is now entering a new phase. It's not just the entrepreneurs, but all players in the ecosystem are connecting dots to lines and then to surfaces, heralding a substantial change that can transform society and industries.

As ecosystems around the world grow significantly, if we think that "Japan is stagnant and not keeping up with other countries around the world," each of us, as part of the ecosystem, must change our perspective on how we interact to accelerate the pace of change.

The Startup Ecosystem Summit 2023 will be held as the kickoff event for the newly established Tokyo Innovation Base (TIB), a platform where ecosystem players come together.

    We will host a collaboration event "Investor Pitching" provided by Smart Round Inc., who will facilitate interactions between investors and entrepreneurs. Participants can receive feedback on business challenges from an impressive lineup of 30 investors.

Profile

Marc is the Founder & President of Startup Genome, and leads global growth and impact. He advises governments, scientific organizations and venture backed startups alike and is an appointed Expert in Entrepreneurship, IT and Future of Economic Progress by the World Economic Forum.

Prior to founding Startup Genome, he co-led the startup ecosystem development unit at Silicon Valley-based Startup Compass (acquired by Sage). At PwC, KPMG, and Bayer Group’s internal management consultancy, Marc advised business executives across various sectors. He also founded a nonprofit organization to catalyze social innovation.

COO at Dealroom.co, a global data platform for intelligence on startups, innovation, high-growth companies, ecosystems and investment strategies. Also in charge of bringing Dealroom's government business to the next level. Before becoming COO in 2023, Matthieu was Head of Ecosystems at Dealroom (2020-2023), part of the Finance & Operations team at Dealroom (2019-2020) and Junior Auditor at EY France (2018-2019). Matthieu holds a MSc of Science specialized in Finance from the IESEG School of Management.

サステナビリティ、ウェルビーイング、Web3領域などへのベンチャー投資家、兼ESGコンサルタント。日本初ESG重視型ベンチャーキャピタルMPower Partnersの創業にマネージング・ディレクターとして参画し、他複数のVCを率いてきた。
モルガン・スタンレーの投資銀行部門にてキャリアを開始し、グローバルM&AやIPO業務に従事。後に米国のドローンベンチャーの日本法人を立ち上げ日本代表に。 著書『これからは、生き方が働き方になっていく』(2018年4月、大和書房)。訳書『ミッション・エコノミー:国×企業で「新しい資本主義」をつくる時代がやってきた』(2021年12月、NewsPicksパブリッシング)。2児の母でもある。

現在京都大学医学部に在籍（6年生）。医学部生として勉学・実習に励むと同時に、スタートアップ・イノベーションに興味を持ち、低学年の頃より国内外の複数の医療ベンチャー企業・VCにてインターンを経験。米国Bostonに留学時に、現地のエコシステムと、日本の医療に関わる若手の閉鎖的環境に課題感を感じ、『医療のInnovatorの出発点』を創造するため、一般社団法人ZEROGATEを創設。多様なイベントを軸に、全国の医学生・医療学生を巻き込み、イノベーション人材育成に取り組む。来年度より、初期研修医として都内病院に勤務予定。

1992年富山県生まれ。元医療事務・診療情報管理士。現在は富山市内のインキュベーション施設HATCHの運営スタッフとしてイベント企画や広報、コミュニケーションサポートを担当。2021年からフリーランスとしてライター、イベント企画・出演、SNSを通じて「富山オタクことちゃん」の愛称で富山の魅力を発信。富山県スタートアップエコシステム形成プロジェクトT-Startup hourモデレーターを担当。

1995年よりM&Aコンサルティング会社を起業し、テクノロジー、金融系企業の買収のアドバイザリを行う。2000年、フィデリティ・ベンチャーズ日本オフィス代表として主に国内IT企業のベンチャーキャピタル投資と 海外投資先企業の日本市場へのエントリ支援を行う。 2003年より、ウォルト・ディズニー・ジャパン株式会社の日本・アジアパシフィックにおける事業開発のコンサルティングに従事。2005年ウォルト・ディズニー・ジャパン入社。ディズニー・モバイルの携帯電話サービスを開始の責任者として事業計画からオペレーションを統括。2010年、ディズニー・インタラクティブ・メディア・グループ　ゼネラルマネージャーに就任。 2012年4月よりフィデリティ・キャピタル・マネジメント日本支店 (現：Eight Roads Ventures Japan) の代表を務める。米国ペンシルバニア大学卒業。ハーバードビジネススクールにてMBA取得。

2002年キャリアデザインセンター入社、2007年4月グーグルに転職し、人材業界担当統括部長を歴任。「Women Will Project」のパートナー担当を経て、同社退社後2016年5月、一般社団法人at Will Workを設立。その後株式会社お金のデザインを経てPlug and Play Japan株式会社にてマーケティング/PRを統括。2022年3月に一般社団法人スタートアップエコシステム協会を設立、代表理事に就任。米国ミネルバ認定講師。
